holland marsh wineries wedding reception decor

Q: Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette? Did you incorporate any cultural or religious traditions in any part of your day?

Michelle: We wanted the guests to enjoy a scenic view, some space to walk around and explore, and most importantly enjoy each other’s company. The rustic setting at Holland Marsh Winery was perfect for that.

Q: Let’s talk wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception? Was any part of the decor DIY?

M: A lot of the decor was DIY and inspired by wedding posts and Pinterest.  (I also told myself to not focus on Pinterest pictures too much because it was time-consuming to make the decors perfect). I purchased many decors second hands using Facebook groups,  did some thrifting for large frames,  and rented a couple of crates.  Our sister-in-law also lent us some beautiful decor, including table number picture frames and a wedding cake topper!

Q: What were the florals like in your wedding? Did you use flowers in any of your design elements like the bridal bouquets, centrepieces or ceremony backdrop? Did they play an important part in the overall style of your wedding?

M: I came across a vendor in Greater Toronto Area – Bonnie – who was beyond helpful in guiding me through the floral selection process, and gave am a budget-friendly way to order flowers in bulk for my DIYs.  I wanted more neutral colors to highlight the wooden, rustic backgrounds.  For the bouquets, I went with muted pink and ivory roses, with lots of eucalyptus leaves. Centrepieces had lots of neutral colors – pops of Baby’s-breath, roses and lots of volumes of greens.

Q: Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?

A: We DIY’ed our own photobooth – using an iPad and some rented professional lighting props. It took a bit to learn how to set up but the animated gifs from every were priceless! Also, we ordered pizza as a late-night snack! We were genuinely surprised to see people taking pictures with pizza boxes as props! We also put a lot of thought in selecting our wedding vendors – and we put up signs at the favours table explaining why local honey and milkweed seeds were special to us. We also found an amazing violinist that did rentions of all the songs we liked, both modern and classical.  Selecting music that presented the two of us was really memorable as well. We also absolutely loved our dessert table, thanks to the lovely bakery shop, who had tireless delivered the sweets on-site <3

Q: Let’s talk fashion. How did you both choose your wedding day look? Describe the looks in detail.

M: I wanted a timeless dress that’s both romantic and classic at the same time.  The tulle in the dress makes it very airy, romantic, and perfect to move around in.  It also blended very well with the veil <3

Q: What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?

M: The vows were really memorable to us because we wrote them without spoiling them in advance for each other.  I cried just saying the vows.  We also looked back at how the guests genuinely had fun at our wedding, whether it was exploring the vineyards, roasting marshmallows by the fireplace, or trying to eat melting popsicles in the sun.

Q: How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.

A: We met in university, knew of each other, but did not become really good friends until we both ended up on a recreational sports team years later.  He proposed to me in the summertime, when we went for a short weekend trip to Prince Edward Island <3

Q: Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?

A: Have fun planning!  It was a lot of work but we really enjoyed it.  an important takeaway: There’s no such thing as perfection  – once you thought about something the third time, and it feels good…go with it!  (You can tell one of us still thinks the other person was too much of a perfectionist! :D)
